Inky Bee Stampers

I created this pretty sea-themed wall hanging for today’s project.  I used a number of sets including the Beauty of the Deep Dies, Beauty of the Deep Stamp Set and the Paper Florist Dies along with some Soft Shimmer 12″ x 12″ Specialty Paper.  I had a lot of fun putting this wall hanging together and this is a great scrap buster project, too!

The wooden wall hanging was purchased at a local craft store and measures approximately 6-1/2″ wide. I first sanded the plaque with fine grit sandpaper then applied two coats of black acrylic craft paint and gave it a few hours to dry. I went to my cardstock scrap bin and pulled out colors that I thought represented the sea, such as Coastal Cabana, Pool Party, Soft Sea Foam and Calypso Coral. I even pulled in a little Crushed Curry and Cajun Craze just to mix things up a bit. I also used some Lost Lagoon and Pretty Peacock Soft Shimmer Specialty Paper on the project.

Very little was stamped for this project. I stamped the seaweed image from the Beauty of the Deep Stamp set using Lost Lagoon ink – once on Coastal Cabana and once on Soft Sea Foam cardstock. The seashell was stamped in Petal Pink using an image from the Seaside Bay Stamp Set. The seaweed and seashell were cut out with coordinating dies, and I die cut a number of sea grasses from cardstock and Soft Shimmer Paper.

I also cut out a number of flower petals and flower centers using the Paper Florist Dies. While you probably won’t see flowers blooming under the sea, I can imagine that there is sea life that might look like flowers in bloom and I’m willing to bet they are just as colorful! When I assembled the flowers, I mixed and matched the colors for some added interest. All of the flowers were assembled using Multipurpose Liquid Glue.

I arranged all of the pieces onto the plaque until I was satisfied with the placement of each piece. I began gluing down the background pieces first, then glued the flowers down from largest to smallest. The small Calypso Coral sea grass pieces were tucked in around the flowers last. All of the pieces were glued down using Multipurpose Liquid Glue and it is holding nicely.

I used a length of Lost Lagoon Bordered Ribbon and wove the ends through the pre-drilled holes in the plaque so that the ends were on the back of the plaque. I then tied knots on each of the ribbon ends and the length of ribbon becomes the hanger for the plaque. To finish up I added an Iridescent Rhinestone to each of the flower centers as well as two vertical “columns” of rhinestones to mimic bubbles rising up from the sea floor. The rhinestones add some nice sparkle!

This was an incredibly fun project to work on! I have put a tutorial together for this project that includes all of the supplies I used as well as some basic instructions. There are no step-by-step instructions, though. If you decide to make your own wall hanging, I highly recommend that you make it all your own!
